5,5 km; 1,5 - 2 Hours, partially marked white-orange

1. Orange Hike - Geocaching

Wonderful varied hike through forests and meadows, with great view on the valley of Rohozná and the farm/campsite.

The same track is also used as a geocache trail with 15 caches.

HERE you can find more hikes, links and mountainbike routes starting from "basecamp".

2. Salaš Zbojská

Salaš Zbojská is a restaurant built according to the ancient Slovak tradition of using whole tree trunks. On the menu are origional Slovak dishes, while service is in traditional costume with folk music playing. The restaurant has its own sheep-farm for the production of meat and cheeses. You are invited to visit the cheese production kitchen up on the hill.

There are several activities possible at Salaš Zbojská. First and foremost, it is a restaurant. So naturally, you can enjoy delicious traditional meals, or just a nice cool beer after a hike. We can highly recommend the dish: Spezialita SUROVCA!

You can also visit the watch tower located on the opposite side of the salaš. This watch tower offers stunning views of the surroundings. To get there you only need to do a short walk of around 15 – 20 Min.

Salaš Zbojská is also a perfect starting point for several hikes. For those who loves long hikes, there is an option to do a full day hike to the Fabola Hola.

The start of the walk “Jakub Surovec’s Journey” through the gorge is on the other side of the main road. You will see a large wooden statue in the meadow and behind it you will spot two information signs. Follow the route ‘diagonal green’, which is about 2.5 to 3 hours. Where the gorge becomes increasingly narrow, just continue by using the rocks as stepping stones through the water! The walk really leads THROUGH the gorge! A great walk for when the weather is hot: it will cool you down beautifully!

At certain times a local mini bus runs to a small traditional farm, situated in the (protected) nature across the main road. Spend a few hours there or go for a walk, after which you can take the mini bus back to the restaurant. Or you could walk all the way back to the restaurant, mainly downhill.

3. Watchtower Brezno

(If you like watchtowers, be sure to check out the watchtower at 2. Salaš Zbojská  and at 4. Čierny Balog)

The Horehronie Watchtower is a 40 meter high watch tower which will provide you with a perfect opportunity to enjoy the stunning natural beauty and rich landscape of central Slovakia. The top platform of the tower offers spectacular 360-Degree Panoramas. Here you can also find a pair of binoculars (free of charge) which will allow you to enjoy views of the surrounding landscape in every detail.

Since the tower 40m high, and located on top of a hill, it is not advisable to climb the watchtower if you are afraid of heights! However, the walk to the tower is still very much worth the trip. An educational interactive trail leads from Brezno to the observation tower. This trail offers visitors an interactive way to learn about the local nature and surroundings as they ascend to the tower.

On the way to the tower you can also see wooden sculptures of animals living in the forests. The trail also includes a 4-meter wooden megaphone, which will provide you with an interesting experience - it amplifies the sounds of the surrounding forest, which you can fully enjoy in the megaphone.

veza brezno.jpg
jelenica-zofka-strednaW.jpg

During the trip you will also pass a menagerie with fallow deer, red deer and mouflons. The city has also added new interactive educational panels near the menagerie, which teaches children in an engaging way to recognize the characteristic features of individual animals, but also to match pictures of leaves and fruits to the correct trees. You are free to feed and pet the animals. They enjoy corn, oats, apples and carrots the most. Please do not give them bread, as this can be harmful for the deer

The easiest spot to park is the Kaufland in Brezno. You can start the hike by walking up hill on the right side of the Kaufland. You will pass a football field on the left side. 100 meters after the football field you turn left. You will soon arrive at the menagerie and see the interactive educational panels. Once you have thoroughly petted and fed the deer you can continue your journey until you see a small cafe. Here you turn right. After a few minutes you will come to a fork in the road. Here you have an option, go left and take the shorter but steeper route, or go right and take the longer but less steep route. Since this is a circular route, our advice is too pick one, and return via the other. On the way back you can have a nice drink at the cafe. This route is around 7km long and takes around 1,5 – 2 hours without stops.

8. Slovensky raj

There are many walks and hikes, over stairs and high ladders, tree trunks and above water. Every route has a name! The most famous is Suchá Belá, which is very pretty!

Other beautiful walks:

  • Prielom hornadu - a walk along and over a river.

  • Sokolia dolina - with very high ladders.

  • Velky Sokol - Like in the jungle, also with stairs.

  • Zejmarská Roklina, which follows a stream/waterfall uphill

Some of the hiking tours in this National Park are not suitable if you are afraid of heights. Children must be able to climb independently and pets cannot join due to the ladders and grates that you walk over.

We have worked out 2 walks for you:

To walk the Suchá Belá you start in Hrabusice, and you go up the green route along the flow of a river. You then come back via yellow and red (rent a mountain bike on the spot for the way back!!). Leave early if you are going to do this walk!

You can also walk a beautiful route on the south side of the Slovak Paradise: the Zejmarská Roklina. In Dedinky, you take the green dotted route "which is on the right of the elevator". Follow this path until you encounter the blue route. This one goes up, past a waterfall. It contains stairs, so it is not suitable for dogs. There is a restaurant upstairs and you can take a lovely break. You then return from where you came, and follow green along the elevator down (lift is out of order!) If you prefer a longer walk you can continue to follow the green dotted route.

9. Banská Bystrica

It is best to park in the modern shopping centre Europa. Here you can park for free for the first 3 hours, and there are many shops within 10 min. Just "follow the flow of people" out of the shopping centre and you will walk to the beautiful square of the city. Here you can find some nice shops selling beautiful Slovak handicrafts. At the top of the square is a high leaning tower, which you can enter. You have a beautiful view of the square and the entire city from there. (entrance behind the ice cream shop on the corner!) And if you turn right at the top of the square, you will see a large plane from the war at the first side street on the left, with various tanks/war equipment behind it in the park. There is also a museum there, with an open park behind it, where many people stay in the sun. At the top right of the square is the local tourist office, here you can buy a do-it-yourself tour booklet of the city. In the building some beautiful old photos of the square, highly recommended!!

A visit to BB can easily be combined with a visit to the town of Spania dolina or the wooden church in Hronsek. Spania Dolina has a beautiful church, and there are nice walks to be made.

The wooden church in Hronsek dates from 1726, seats 1100 people and is built entirely of wood, without nails/metal. If you report to house number 8, the church will be opened for you. The Death Bat Cave is one of Slovakia's most unique and significant high-altitude caves, located in the central part of the Low Tatras. The entrance to this cave is located in the middle of the nature of the Low Tatras. You should therefore see this trip as a beautiful, but tough hike with a visit to the cave as an extra.

The Cave of Dead Bats is not a typical "walk-through" show cave. It's managed by speleologists from Speleo Club Slovakia, who provide guided tours. The basic guided tour is approximately 1 km long, lasting about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It features rocky paths with rope and safety railings, making it more adventurous than standard caves but generally manageable. It's permissible for children from 8 years old who are physically fit.

Its exceptional beauty and scientific value led to its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List

Unlike most caves that are adorned with calcite stalactites and stalagmites, Ochtinská Cave boasts a breathtaking array of aragonite formations. The cave features three distinct generations of aragonite, each with its own characteristics. The oldest formations date back 121,000 to 138,000 years!
